The Six Stumpf Siblings
From Wald-Michelbach, Hesse, Germany to Richmond, Virginia
Johan Adam Stumpf and Maria Margaretha Knapp married in Wald-michelbach, Hesse, Germany on 7 May 1837. They had 11 children. Many immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Richmond, Virginia. Several were successful in Richmond-area businesses.
Their Children:
1. Johannes Stumpf: born 22 November 1837 in Wald-michelbach. He was ordained in 1862 as Roman Catholic Priest and remained in Germany. He died in Dieburg in 1906.
2. Johan Adam Stumpf was born 29 May 1840 in Wald-michelbach. He first married Apollonia Madeline Heppert in Richmond, Virginia in 1876. Then Catherine Halbeib in 1894. He died in 1902.
3. Sofia Stumpf was born 18 January 1843 in Wald-michelbach. She married Johan Philip Arnold Haag in Germany in 1867. She died there in 1874.
4. Elisabeta Stumpf was born 11 Feb 1845 in Wald-michelbach. She never married.
5. Anna Maria Stumpf was born 19 Apr 1847 in Wald-michelbach. She married Johan Martin about 1867, and died in Mainz about 1915.
6. Peter Stumpf was born 11 May 1850 in Wald-michelbach. He first immigrated to New York before 1870 with some cousins to learn the beer business. He first married Elizabeth Messerschmidt in Richmond in 1873. After her death, he married Hermina Morgenstern in 1895. The only child from his first marriage, Mamie, was sent to live with his mother and sister in Germany. Peter was a successful businessman and ran a lager brewery in downtown Richmond.
7. Christopf Stumpf was born 25 January 1852 in Wald-michelbach. He worked as a clerk for his brother Peter. He died in Richmond in 1874.
8. Joseph Stumpf was born 21 Aug 1855 in Wald-michelbach. He arrived in the U.S. in 1882 and married Wilhelmina Dorsam in 1888 in Richmond. They had 5 daughters. He worked for his brother Peter as a salesman.
9. Georg Stumpf was born 21 Feb 1858 in Wald-michelbach. He was in Richmond by 1875 and never married. He appears to have owned a saloon or bar. He died in Richmond on 26 October 1889.
10. Edward Adam Stumpf Sr. was born 23 August 1860 in Wald-michelbach. Educated in Mainz, he arrived in Richmond by 1875. He married Bertha Fredericka Schumann, the daughter of a successful German watchman and jeweler from Leipzig. Edward was a shared holder in Peter's business and opened his own hotel in downtown Richmond in 1909. He died in Richmond in 1932.
11. Johan Georg Stumpf was born 18 August 1863. Not much is known about him except that he remained in Germany and died in Dieburg in 1896.
